For a liberating education:

RESEARCH AND PRAXIS INSPIRED BY PAULO FREIRE AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

What is the Paulo Freire Initiative?

Launched on September 19, 2021, Columbia University's Paulo Freire Initiative celebrates the centenary of one of the most influential educators of all time. With nearly 500,000 citations and works translated into more than 40 languages, Paulo Freire continues to inspire educators and social justice movements around the world.

The initiative, led by Teachers College and the Lemann Center for Brazilian Studies at Columbia's Institute of Latin American Studies (ILAS), promotes critical pedagogy, equity, and democratic education through lectures, research grants, and international collaborations. The Paulo Freire Initiative seeks to keep Freire's vision alive -celebrating education as a practice of freedom and a tool for social transformation.
