Study Guides
The Educational Film Study Guide Project, led by the Paulo Freire Initiative at Columbia University, aims to create comprehensive, thought-provoking study guides for a curated selection of films on critical pedagogy and popular education. These study guides will serve as valuable resources for higher education and ongoing teacher professional development, offering insights into education's transformative potential through film.
The films selected for this project will challenge traditional educational paradigms, explore themes such as social justice and community-based learning, and engage with the principles of critical pedagogy as articulated by Paulo Freire. Each study guide will include in-depth analysis, discussion prompts, reflection questions, and suggested activities, enabling educators to use the films to foster critical thinking, dialogue, and engagement with educational practices across diverse social contexts.
This project seeks to strengthen the integration of audiovisual media into learning environments by supporting educators in developing more dynamic, inclusive, and participatory teaching strategies. Through these study guides, the Paulo Freire Initiative aims to inspire both students and educators to engage critically with the films, connecting their themes to contemporary educational challenges and opportunities.
